ARBOTRADE – Biodegradable tree growth sleeves
The biodegradable ARBOTRADE Premium growth sleeve is made from the award-winning, fully bio-based material ARBOBLEND® and was developed as part of the “TheForestCleanup” research project.
Collaboration & expertise: ARBOTRADE is the result of a strong partnership between TECNARO and JOMA-POLYTEC, which combines materials expertise with specialisation in materials processing.
The managing directors of ARBOTRADE are delighted to be able to play an active role in such important global issues as the sustainable reforestation of forests and are confident that, through their joint venture, they have created an ideal platform for developing innovative bioplastic products in collaboration with other partners. In the past, such projects often failed due to high initial investment costs and a lack of market access.
Background
In forestry, tree sleeves are used to protect young trees from wildlife browsing and environmental influences during the sensitive early growth phase. Conventional solutions are made from traditional plastics. In practice, this often leads to a conflict of objectives: on the one hand, protecting young trees is essential; on the other hand, vast quantities of microplastics are generated when these sleeves are left in the forest after use.
The aim was to develop a bio-based and biodegradable alternative that is easy to handle, offers good light transmission and is functionally equivalent to conventional tree guards.
Challenge
The search was on for a material that would meet several requirements simultaneously:
- sufficient mechanical stability for use in forestry
- resistance to weathering and wear and tear over several growing seasons
- good processability in industrial manufacturing processes
- both bio-based and biodegradable under forest conditions
Material solution
Made from a bio-based material, the sleeve is fully biodegradable and thus reduces microplastic residues in the forest. The growth sleeve offers quick and easy installation, above-average light transmission for optimal plant growth, and space-saving transport.
Result
The ARBOTRADE growth sleeve provides a sustainable, functional solution that combines ecological benefits with practicality. The sleeve effectively protects young plants, reduces environmental impact and enables resource-efficient production and use.
