The Biopolymer Company: The History of TECNARO
1998
The company was founded as a spin-off from the Fraunhofer Society – Institute for Chemical Technology (ICT) by Dipl.-Ing. Helmut Nägele and Jürgen Pfitzer
2000
The headquarters of the fledgling start-up were relocated from Pfinztal in Baden-Württemberg to the GIS Eisenach Start-up and Innovation Centre in Thuringia
2006
The company returns to Ilsfeld-Auenstein in Baden-Württemberg and begins series production of ARBOFORM® for the automotive industry
2008
Turnover increases by 40% despite the global economic crisis
2015
The company moved into its newly built production plant at its current headquarters in Ilsfeld, and by expanding production capacity, laid the foundations for future growth
2018
Production capacity is doubled through new plant technology, and the production and storage area is doubled
2019
Helmut Nägele and Jürgen Pfitzer are being removed from the German Senate of Economy by Consul-General Dieter Härthe and Dr Walter Döring. They are also being removed from the Senate of Economy Europe.
2021
Jürgen Pfitzer will become a patron of sustainable business at THE17

TECNARO celebrates its 25th anniversary
A pioneer since 1998 and one of the innovation and technology leaders in the global bioplastics industry
Award-winning bioplastics from Ilsfeld for the world. TECNARO stands for TEChnologies for the industrial use of NAchwachsende ROhstoffe (renewable raw materials) in plastics processing.
From the finest fibres for yarns and textiles, through completely non-toxic baby toys, to heavy-duty moulded parts such as the ‘lost core’ for ALL carbon-ceramic brakes manufactured by Brembo SGL Carbon for, for example, Porsche and
Formula 1.
Inspired by the Rio de Janeiro environmental conference, Jürgen Pfitzer and Helmut Nägele began researching CO₂ reduction potential in the plastics industry at Fraunhofer ICT in 1996.
With their groundbreaking invention ‘ARBOFORM® – liquid wood’, the two founded TECNARO GmbH in 1998 as one of the very first spin-off companies of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft and one of the first companies in the world to focus exclusively(!) on the production of bioplastics. The aim was, and remains, the further development, production and distribution of the lignin-based bioplastic ‘Liquid Wood’ ARBOFORM®, as well as the other TECNARO materials ARBOBLEND® (biopolymer compounds) and the natural fibre-reinforced composite ARBOFILL®.
TECNARO thus replaces fossil raw materials such as crude oil with sustainably available plant-based raw materials such as lignin, starch and sugar…
TECNARO impresses not only with its modern, environmentally ethical approaches, but also with its tangibly superior bioplastic granules, which are gaining a foothold in the market in competition with fossil-based raw materials and the plastics producers of the large-scale chemical industry. Thanks to the ingenuity of the TECNARO team – which now numbers just under fifty – and in response to the challenges posed by the multitude of customer enquiries, over 6,000 formulations have been developed for a wide variety of mass-production applications.
Our promise: excellent bioplastics do not cost the earth. We are your partner for the sustainable future of the plastics industry.
Here at TECNARO, we have made it our mission to create solutions that will transform the plastics industry in a sustainable way. As pioneers in the global bioplastics sector, we manufacture exclusively at our site in Germany using 100 % certified green electricity and green gas. Through these measures, we reduce the greenhouse gas emissions associated with our production.
We produce exclusively bio-based plastic granules made from renewable raw materials such as lignin, starch and sugar. In doing so, we offer a plant-based alternative to fossil-based plastics and make a significant contribution to reducing CO₂ emissions in the plastics industry.
Our company operates in accordance with the DIN EN ISO 9001:2015 quality management system to ensure that our products meet the highest standards in terms of quality, sustainability and safety.
